Our Mission:
To Spread The Joy
Of The Fiber Arts - Knitting, Crochet, Sewing, Weaving, Etc!
At Philly Knits, we hold
meetups
in various places (mainly cafes and libraries), and promote the "fiber arts" to schools
and the public at large. We also host a Yarn Bombing
group and have participated in several fiber arts projects.
We encourage our members to start and
post their meetups (knitting, crochet, sewing, etc.) We also post requests
for volunteers for educational, charity, and artistic projects, and work with
local museums, libraries, educational institutions, businesses, and
rehabilitation facilities.
The Fiber Arts are good for the brain and can relax or challenge us. It also connects us to one another, as well as to the
other arts and sciences. It is particularly adaptable to STEAM
programs: https://steamedu.com/ &
http://stemtosteam.org/. We
also collect yarn and Fabric for the Philadelphia School District and our
Philly Knits Yarn Bombers. Learn how to donate
below.
PLZ CONTACT
The Philadelphia School Board and ask them to teach more 'Skills In School',
such as The Fiber Arts!
So, please join us and help expand the Fiber Arts throughout Philadelphia! Our meetup
is free, sharing is key.
Announcing "The

Each
One, Teach One!
Beginners: Check out
Learn2Knit for self-guided print and video instruction,
including how to make your own knitting & tapestry needles. At meetups,
please bring 9-inch long, size 8, wood needles, and yarn that is
one color, smooth, and worsted (medium) weight. But anything is fine. If you want to make sure that someone will be able to help
you get started, email those particular
MEETUP
attendees and ask, OR contact me (LynnLandes@gmail.com) and we can make arrangements to get you
started.
Attitude: Feel
free to knit simply or more complex. It's up to you. Some of us
don't use patterns and knit very
simply, enjoying the meditative nature of knitting and crochet, while others
like to be challenged. We want to encourage you to do what you enjoy
doing.
Host & Post Meetups:We encourage our members to host
their own meetups
in cafes and other public spaces. Its a great way to show the public
that this is a fun skill, as well as a great way to socialize and see the city! For
those who post meetups, please allow 2 weeks before the meetup date. Also,
consider using a PHILLY KNITS POSTCARDto advertise your
meetups at cafe, libraries, etc. - just add the days and times at the bottom of the
postcard!
Adopt-A-Library:
There are several libraries (Library
Groups) that host knitting groups. We
would like to see a knitting group in every library, so we encourage our
members to call up and offer to start a group if your local library
doesn't have one. We have lots of information and suggested videos on our
"Learn2Knit" link. And make sure
there is a flyer about your knitting program posted prominently in the library
where visitors can see it. So
please contact your local library and volunteer. It is a great way to
meet your neighbors.
School Program: We are always looking for
supplies (yarn, needles, hooks, tapestry needles, etc.) to help out with
in-school and after-school knitting program, or if you need volunteers for your
school knitting programs please post your requests on our
MEETUP
or contact LynnLandes@gmail.com to post it
for you. Volunteers need these
security clearances.
Resource
Information: On the yellow table at the top of this page, we
list all kinds of helpful information. If you want to add info,
please email
LynnLandes@gmail.com.
Local Sources:
We are always looking for local sources of
plant and animal fiber (including fairs where they are sold), as well as locally
made needles. Or maybe we’ll
learn to make the needles ourselves! So, please send us that information.
RSVPs:
Please try to keep your RSVPs up-to-date so that members can see how
large and active your group is.
Thank you!!
